Proof We Make a Difference
The Torres Shelter provides essential services to nearly 700 unduplicated clients a year, for an average of 31 nights per person. Clients are approximately 75% male and 25% female, aligned with the fact that we are the only emergency shelter in Chico for men. We also house a large number of young people. Roughly 25% of our clients are under the age of 24, half of those being under 18 as part of a family. We average 3-4 families at a time, and we are the only emergency shelter that provides for two-parent families.
We are proud of the work we do with our clients. Recent outcome statistics prove that we provide them with a valuable and beneficial service:
38% (242) of the clients that exited our program moved into permanent or transitional housing. 58 moved to transitional housing at the Esplanade House, VECTORS (Veterans Executive Committee to Organize Rehabilitative Services), Campbell Commons and/or the Well. 184 were accepted into permanent (rental) housing.
25% (139) of our adult clients (556) obtained or retained employment as a result of their participation in our program.
46% (293) of our clients obtained other income (e.g. SS, SSI, TANF, GA, VA or Victim Witness) as a result of their participation in our program.
60% (382) of our clients arrived at the shelter with mental illness or chemical addiction. 43% (164) of these clients found this condition stabilized for a minimum of 30 days as a result of their participation in our program.
The positive work that we do benefits not only the individuals that we serve, but also the broader community. Apart from the profound human cost to individuals who are homeless, the community in general bears a burden when homeless individuals do not have adequate opportunities. When persons experiencing homelessness have the opportunity to avail themselves of the services we provide, the dignity and wellbeing of the entire community benefits.
